Freyja Caroline Hansen

Name: Freyja Caroline Hansen

Age: 16

Biography: Freyja Hansen was born to a wizard father and muggle mother, and was named after the Norse goddess Freyja. Her father's family belonged to a cult of Freyja worshippers, and spells were performed at the birth of every first daughter of a cult member in an attempt to ensure that each woman born into the cult would have the gift of prophecy and the skills of Freyja the seer. It worked with most, to a greater or lesser extent, but each girl was encouraged in her divination skills from a very early age, to ensure the greatest chance of success.

Freyja did not fit the usual stereotype of the cult. Most were purebloods, but, as her father, Freyr, had fallen in love with a local schoolteacher, Miriam, she was the only half-blood in her generation. Most of the cult members were the typical blonde-haired, blue eyed Norse stereotype, but Freyja had inherited dark hair and very pale skin from her mother, which made her stick out like a sore thumb. Taller than most girls her age, she always had a willowy grace that set her apart. Her mother encouraged her to be as "normal" as possible, sending her to ballet lessons in a muggle class from the age of 3. Miriam also insisted that she attend muggle school, and she wouldn't take no for an answer. Freyr just about tolerated this, on the condition that he was permitted to school her in magic at home, and then to send her to a proper magic school from 11. This education path was the source of many epic rows between Freyja's parents.

In fact, these disagreements over Freyja's life path were what caused her parents to divorce when she was 9. Custody was shared for the first year, but the arguments whenever her parents met were so monstrous that the custody agreement was reviewed, and Freyr was awarded full custody, with visitation rights for Miriam only being awarded in school holidays. It wasn't too bad for a while, as she still attended the primary school at which her mother taught, so they were able to have some quality time on a regular basis, but as soon as primary ended, Freyr enrolled the 11-year old Freyja at Beauxbatons in the south of France, the most elite and refined magic school in Europe.

Freyja hated France. She hated the snobbery, the elitism, and the forced camaraderie. While she impressed with her broom riding skills, divination was seen as more of a joke and a subject which no-one really wanted to study, than a field of magic in its own right, and this often brought ridicule. So, in order to try to win some friends, she would perform simple acts of divination to amuse her classmates - finding lost jewellery, scrying to see if she could predict the dinner menu, reading tea leaves or coffee grounds to find out who had crushes on who... However, when alone, she would often use her skills to discover things she really shouldn't know, which often got her into trouble with her teachers. One of her favourite pranks involved Jean-Michel Serriere, a rather gorgeous young professor of alchemy. She was 14, and had been dared to find out what colour boxers the poor young man was wearing during a specific class, and had caused uproar when she revealed that he had gone commando...

That had been her first ever detention, and she had been put through 3 hours of conjuring by Jean-Michel, being forced to conjure random objects over and over and over, which was torture for her, as conjuration was by far her weakest area. The following 18 months at Beauxbatons were pure hell for her, with her divination pranks getting more and more out of hand. She was eventually expelled just after the start of her 5th year for discovering and advertising Beauxbatons' secret store of dark magic books and instruments. Freyr had been incensed by this, and, despairing at his daughter's behaviour, was prepared to enrol her at Durmstrang, hoping that a harsh regime in a cold country would knock her into shape. What he didn't realise was that her pranks were caused not by some inherent bad behaviour, but by boredom. The divination modules at Beauxbatons had been well beneath her level of skill, and, as a result, had acted up.

Freyja begged him not to send her to Durmstrang, and, as luck would have it, Hogwarts in Scotland had recently reopened. It had had a formidable reputation in its first incarnation, and, in a fit of desperation, Freyr paid the outlandish fees and enrolled his problematic daughter there...

Magical Strengths: Freyja excels in all areas of divination - crystal balls, geomancy, tarot, scrying, tea leaves, coffee grounds, runes, etc. She has a small precognitive ability that assists greatly in these areas, and she has been known to dabble in the slightly darker practices to ensure that her divinations are accurate. She has been riding a broom since almost before she could walk, thanks to her father taking charge of her magical education, despite her mother initially wanting Freyja to live a quiet, normal, muggle life. Her favoured instrument for divination is an ancient set of Norse runes, fashioned from bone, allegedly human, that has been handed down through her father's family for generations.

Magical Weaknesses: Freyja has difficulty with conjuring, even simple objects. She has a habit of twitching her wand partway through the spell, and either conjuring the wrong item, or causing something altogether different to happen. This caused problems when she was 11, in her first term at Beauxbatons, when she tried to conjure flowers for her teacher, and ended up conjuring a snake instead. Her father despairs at her lack of ability in conjuring, as he has been teaching her since she was old enough to hold a wand.
